Living European Diversity
Since 1990 the European Youth Parliament in Germany offers young people between 16 and 22 years of age the opportunity to express their opinion concerning European political topis. We are part of the network of the European Youth Parliament (EYP), which is a unique educational programme of the Berlin-based Schwarzkopf Foundation. As a network of independent associations, EYP is present in 40 European countries and organises almost 600 events every year, thus about 1.500 days of EYP activities every year, involving close to 35.000 participants. Thousands of young people are active as volunteers all over Europe, making EYP a programme truly for young people, by young people.
The European Youth Parliament’s mission is to inspire and empower young Europeans to become open-minded, tolerant and active citizens. The EYP encourages independent thinking and initiative in young people and facilitates the learning of crucial social and professional skills. Hundreds of thousands of young people have already taken part in regional, national and international sessions, formed friendships and made international contacts across and beyond borders. The EYP has thus made a vital contribution towards European unity and bridging gaps between cultures. Today the EYP is one of the largest European platforms for political debate, intercultural encounters, European civic education and the exchange of ideas among young people in Europe.
The European Youth Parliament in Germany on the one hand has been organising an annual school competition, the “National Selection Process”, since 1990. Over 400 pupils from more than 70 schools across Germany take part in the first round of our national selection. Individually selected participants as well as 33 schools continue to the second round – the three "Regional Selection Conferences" we are organising. Each of this sessions select individual participants and three delegations to take part in the “National Selection Conference”. In the course of this final conference, culminating in a parliamentary debate, a prominent jury selects four individual delegates and two delegations to represent Germany at the International Sessions of the European Youth Parliament.
On the other hand, we give pupils the opportunity to take part in our “European Forums”. Up to 150 young people from all over Europe or from specific regions within Europe gather at these forums to discuss current European issues. Unlike the National Selection procedure, European Forums do not require a selection and thus lack the stress of competition.
Besides our Sessions since 2010 we have an extraordinary programme called "EYP@School" conducting small two-day in-school events for about 60-80 pupils organised to bring the EYP close to the participants, especially reaching out to those who would not be able to attend one of our regular events.
